Increased Migration, Increased Security Concern Essay

Migration has the same meaning, the movement of a group of people who leave their native country to settle temporarily or permanently in a different country. People might voluntarily move, but others are forced to leave their country because of dire situations. An analysis shows how the economic crisis, terrorism, and leaders play a role in how immigration is viewed. While it is impossible to send all illegal immigrants back to their countries, preventing further immigration will help eliminate some security threats and increase the stability of a country’s government. The North-South gap has allowed immigration to become a global issue. While the rich North benefits from industrialization, the South suffers from poor development and†¦show more content†¦It has also increased prejudice towards certain ethnic groups and religions. Leadership plays an important role on how a state handles illegal immigration. Leaders can have a different approach to dealing with immigr ation and it determines what their stance will be in regard to regulation. Pressures from members of their political party and fear of future election outcomes can also force a leader to step up anti-immigration policies. Given certain circumstances, illegal immigration can become a top priority for a leader or the least of his or her problems. Given the recent unrest in North Africa, it is no surprise that many of those citizens are fleeing from their homes in search of safety and stability. The tiny island of Lampedusa serves as a midpoint from northern Africa to Italy. For some, Italy is the destination, but for others, it is the gateway to the rest of the European Union. Albeit the situation in their country is terrible, immigrants are not greeted with open arms and warm welcomes. Instead, they are seen as burdens to the Italian government and citizens. For example, while campaigning for his third term as prime minister in 2008, Silvio Berlusconi promised to limit illegal immig ration which he said was the cause of an increase in crime rates.
